My job at Alibaba is to help these factories succeed in exporting. I advise them on store optimization, guide them through the platform, and — crucially — help them find qualified international buyers.

The Long Version — How I Got Here
Before Alibaba, I saw the sourcing industry from the sidelines. I watched buyers fly into China, spend weeks visiting factories, negotiate through translators, and still leave unsure if they'd picked the right partner. I watched factories with great products struggle to connect with international buyers because they didn't know how to present themselves online.
The gap was obvious: there was a trust deficit between global buyers and Chinese manufacturers. Buyers were afraid of scams. Factories were frustrated by tire-kickers. And in between, a whole industry of middlemen was profiting from that confusion — marking up prices, hiding factory identities, and adding layers of cost without adding proportional value.
When I joined Alibaba as a customer manager, my territory covered Shandong's industrial clusters — Heze, Jinan, Qingdao, Linyi. I started visiting factories daily: bearing workshops in Liaocheng, furniture lines in Cao County, glass bottle furnaces in Heze's industrial parks, EV assembly lines in Shan County. I learned to spot the difference between a factory that was photo-ready and one that was production-ready.
And I realized something: my unique position gave me something no pure sourcing agent or trading company could offer. I wasn't paid by transaction. I had no incentive to steer you toward the factory that gave me the highest commission. My incentive was simple: match you with a factory that would perform so well you'd keep ordering — because a factory with growing export orders renews their Alibaba membership.
